UCSC Physical Planning and Construction (PP&C), together with Friends of the Cowell Lime Works Historic District, is seeking up to three student interns to conduct research and prepare poster displays for the Henry Cowell Sesquicentennial Conference in October 2015. The Cowell Sesquicentennial will commemorate the 150th anniversary of Henry Cowell’s arrival in Santa Cruz and his purchase of the land that is now the UCSC main campus. Conference speakers from various disciplines will address both the Cowell family itself and the broader context of industrial development in central California and its environmental effects. A multi-disciplinary poster session will offer students the opportunity to present their research on topics related to the history of the Campus lands.
Students with a background and interest in California Native American history, environmental history, industrial and labor history, and/or the history of US immigration are encouraged to apply for this unique internship opportunity! Internships are unpaid, but students may receive two units of academic credit. A minimum of six hours of work per week is required. Interns must be available to attend the Henry Cowell Sesquicentennial Conference in October 2015.

About The Cowell Lime Works Historic District
The Cowell Lime Works Historic District, which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, encompasses some 30 acres at the main entrance to the UCSC campus. The district includes lime kilns, the cook house, cooperage, hay barn, Cardiff House, worker cabins, and many other buildings and structures from the 19th century. The complex of historic buildings and features represent the full range of facilities needed in a historic rural industrial operation, including both lime processing facilities and also ranch and worker support buildings.
