Alan Christy, Associate Professor of History, has received this year's John Dizikes Teaching Award in Humanities. In his nomination, both students and colleagues alike offered high praise regarding Alan's teaching skills and the positive impact he has had on students over the years.
Christy is known in the History department for teaching Early Modern East Asia (40A), World War II Memories in the U.S. and Japan (80Y, co-taught with Alice Yang), Tokugawa Japan (150B), Modern Japan (150C), and The Japanese Empire, 1868-1945 (150D), among others. He is the faculty leader of the project "ROUTES: Digital Humanities Learning Through Interconnected Individual Stories," which arose from Christy's HIS 150D (Japanese Empire) offering in the Winter quarter of 2011. The unique structure and experience of the overall course has inspired 30 students to continue on with the project to the present day.
This award honors Professor Emeritus of American Studies John Dizikes, and his powerful ability to inspire and engage generations of students. The Division of Humanities initiated a distinguished teaching award in his name, beginning in 2002, to be awarded every Spring Quarter thereafter. There is a monetary award in the amount of $3,000 to be paid to the recipient.
In addition, Professor Christy has selected two undergraduate students to split a $3,000 scholarship. The 2011-12 Dizikes Student Scholarship Award has been awarded to Maritza Santa Cruz and Jeffrey Sun, undergraduates in History and members of the ROUTES Team.
Alan Christy and John Dizikes will be on hand to present the awards to Maritza and Jeffrey, and will join Humanities faculty, staff, and students in honoring our other Humanities affiliates receiving recognition during our "Celebrating Excellence in the Humanities 2012" Spring Awards Event on Thursday, May 3rd, 2012.
