History Graduate Alum Kevin P. McDonald’s Research Cited in Recent The New Yorker Article

Kevin P. McDonald (Ph.D. in History, 2008) was recently cited in “Were Pirates Foes of the Modern Order—or Its Secret Sharers?,” published in the July 15, 2024 issue of The New Yorker.  McDonald’s 2015 book, Pirates, Merchants, Settlers, and Slaves, was mentioned several times in the article’s discussion about the role of pirates in the global economy of the 17th and 18th centuries.

While at UCSC, McDonald studied with Marilyn Westerkamp.  He is currently an Assistant Professor of Colonial America and Atlantic World History at Loyola Marymount University, with research interests in maritime history, pirates and piracy, colonialism/empire, and slavery.
