In the spring of 2010, UC Santa Cruz Associate Professor of History Brian Catlos was awarded the 2009 Julian Bishko Memorial Prize for the best article published in 2008 or 2009 in the field of medieval Iberian history by a North American Scholar. The winning article, “The de Reys (1220-1501): The Evolution of a ‘Middle Class’ Muslim Family in Christian Aragon,” was published by Professor Catlos in the journal Viator: Medieval and Renaissance Studies.

Initiated in 2003 by the Society for Spanish and Portuguese Historical Studies, the Bishko Prize honors Professor Charles Julian Bishko, the distinguished historian of medieval Iberia who taught for 39 years at the University of Virginia.
