Description
Studies the emergence of the secular intellectual as a force in French cultural life. Topics considered include Voltaire and the Republic of Letters, Robespierre and the self-fashioning of the revolutionary intellectual, the Dreyfus Affair, the enigma of French fascism, and existentialism and the Cold War.

Enrollment Requirements
Prerequisite(s): satisfaction of the Entry Level Writing and Composition requirements, two upper-division history courses, or permission of the instructor. Enrollment is restricted to junior and senior history majors.
