Course Substitutions

The purpose of a course substitution is to allow students to use “related” regularly scheduled UCSC courses from another discipline towards their degree requirements. These courses may not be applied toward a second major or minor.

History majors may substitute up to two upper-division individual study or “related” courses for their Upper-Division Electives requirements (at least 50% of the readings and written work must be historical in nature). Substituted courses may not be used towards satisfying Chronologic Distribution requirements.

Classical Studies, German Studies, Jewish Studies, and East Asian Studies students must consult their Faculty Adviser regarding the use of course substitutions towards degree requirements.

Applying Course Substitutions

Complete the Department of History Course Substitution form and write a brief paragraph describing how the course relates to your studies; then meet with your Faculty Adviser. Your adviser may ask for samples of your written work or the course syllabus. Submit your completed form to the History Department, Humanities 201.
