Application

Humanities Undergraduate Research Awards (HUGRA) - Fall Quarter

Students may submit proposals for projects involving research within or including any of the humanities disciplines. Up to 10 winners will be awarded a stipend of $500. Instructions and application forms are available online at the Institute for Humanities Research (IHR) website.

 

Donald A. Strauss Scholarship - Winter Quarter

The Donald A. Strauss Scholarship Foundation allows juniors to pursue a public service project during their Senior year by providing $10,000 for educational expenses. The project may be a new undertaking or an extension of the recipient's current activities. Campus Application Deadline: January 28, 2010 to the Office of Honors and Awards/Chancellor's Office, 200 Kerr Hall. Additional information may be found at the Strauss Foundation website.

 

Department of History Hitchcock Awards - Spring Quarter

Each year, the History Department solicits nominations from its faculty for the best undergraduate papers written in a history course or as a history senior thesis. Specific awards may be conferred for work based on geographic distinctions (e.g., American, world, European or Asian history) Optional awards will also be awarded at the discretion of the Undergraduate Education Committee (UEC). Optional awards are available in the following categories:

a. pre-600
b. pre-1800
c. trans-regional history, for work that does not fall clearly into one of the three areas of concentration
d. the UEC award, for an outstanding paper that is not recognized under one of the above categories

A paper or thesis written in any quarter of the current academic year is eligible for nomination. Winners receive $100 in recognition of their achievement. The top three papers, irrespective of the departmental awards, will be forwarded to the Humanities Division for consideration in the Dean’s and Chancellor’s award competitions.

 

Deans’ and Chancellor’s Undergraduate Award - Spring Quarter

The Deans and the Chancellor wish to encourage and stimulate outstanding scholarship and creativity among undergraduate students based on work developed in courses or programs in the normal pattern of academic activity at UCSC. Up to fifty undergraduates, 10 from each of the five academic divisions, will receive the Deans’ Award of $100 for outstanding achievement in their division. The Chancellor will recognize the top three students from each division with an additional $100. Application forms are available from the offices of the Chancellor, divisions, departments, and colleges at the beginning of spring quarter.

 

Steck Award - Spring Quarter

The Steck Award will recognize the most outstanding research project chosen from the fifteen Chancellor’s Awardees. This student will receive an additional $1,000. In addition, his or her research project will be bound and copies given to the student, the research supervisor, the UC Santa Cruz Library, and the Steck Family whose generous contributions have made this award possible.
