History is a discipline that mines the past experience of human beings in order to understand how people and societies have changed over time. The discipline of history seeks both to understand the deep roots of the present and to gain an appreciation for how variable human existence can be.

The undergraduate programs offered by the history department are designed to bring about an understanding of the ideas, experiences, and events that have shaped this country and the world at large. Our courses bring students and faculty together in exciting, and demanding pursuits through the study of cultural, social, intellectual, and political history. Students are encouraged to pursue their studies in interdisciplinary and international settings as our programs also complement existing majors in the Arts, Humanities, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences.

By gaining a broad social, political and cultural understanding, our students achieve excellent preparation for further study in a wide variety of graduate or professional programs in countless disciplines. Developing capabilities in research, analysis, and writing are invaluable tools that open up a wide range of career possibilities to our students as well as the foundation upon which later professional training can be built. History department graduates are now working in nearly every field imaginable as teachers, lawyers, executives, journalists, filmmakers, activists, writers, and public servants.
