I study modern European intellectual history. I focus on social and political theory in the twentieth century, particularly in France in the postwar period. I am interested in the relationship between political radicalism and philosophy, as well as the theoretical and ideological bases of political movements. My work to date has been on the French existentialists Simone de Beauvoir and Jean-Paul Sartre and the liberal theorist Raymond Aron.
I am also trained to teach world history, and I attempt to use global political-economic perspectives in my own research on the history of ideas whenever possible.
